This unique series of DVD films follows the voyages of the Saga Horizon - a modern bulk carrier - as she plies her trade across the world’s oceans.

With access to the bridge, engine room and other operational areas of the ship, this is really as close as you get to being on board a modern working cargo vessel. Watch from the bridge as the ship manoeuvres in the famous shipping channels of Europe, North America and Asia. See the cargoes of lumber, pulp and steel as they are loaded and unloaded. FROM ANTWERP TO JAPAN

This voyage starts by loading steel in Antwerp and Brake for the USEC. Discharge of cargo, then loading in Wilmington and Savannah for Japan. The vessel then calls at Munguba 300 miles up the Amazon river, to load more cargo for Japan. After this we proceed though the Panama canal. There is extensive footage of this trip including many close-ups of other vessels and ocean liners including the QE2. After Panama we head North and call at Vancouver for more cargo. Next we encounter the extreme conditions between Canada and Japan passing through the Aleutians. During the video there are interviews with the Captain and the crew. The crew are seen at work and enjoying leisure time. Also many spectacular shots of whales, dolphins and seabirds seen during the voyage

FROM VANCOUVER TO THE YANGTZE RIVER

This trip begins with the vessel loading pulp cargo in Vancouver, for Japan Korea and China. During discharge in Japan, the vessel visits Tagonoura at the base of mount Fuji, Nagoya and Osaka. There are close up shots of the traffic round Japan and a minor incident with a US aircraft carrier. The the vessel then calls at Inchon Korea, before proceeding to China for a 200 mile trip up the Yangtze river to a port called Dagang. This final part of the video shows the armada of barge traffic and congestion encountered on the Yangtze.

Also featured in this video are interviews with the Captain and crew. The crew working on deck and in the engine room. Shots of seabirds and spectacular shots of a large spool of dolphins on the bow.

FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA TO EUROPE

This voyage starts with the vessel arriving at the straits of Juan de Fuca, after a ballast passage from Japan. We then load pulp and lumber at New Westminster, Wood fibre, Crofton and Cowichan Bay. Next the vessel leaves BC and proceeds to Long View on the Columbia river to complete loading. It’s an interesting trip up the Columbia river with spectacular scenery and various traffic passing close by. The next port is Long Beach and there are some interesting shots of the harbor traffic at this port. The vessel then proceeds to the Panama canal and there is extensive footage of this and the vessels passed. Discharging in Europe, we visit Greenock, Portbury, Flushing, Brake and Antwerp. The video ends with the trip up the Schelde river to Antwerp and many close up shots of the various ships passed.

 
 
 
     
 

THE NORTH PACIFIC VOYAGES

This trip starts with the vessel loading steel at Kaohsiung Taiwan, for the West coast of the USA and Canada. Then back to the Far East via the Aleutian Islands with full lumber cargo. Included in the video are numerous close up shots of many different ships. The crew working and involved in other aspects of shipboard life. Interviews with the Captain and members of the crew. The video features dramatic footage of the passage North of the Aleutian Islands in winter, where the ship becomes covered in snow and ice. Also shown in this video is a fascinating look around the Queen Mary in Long Beach.

FROM VANCOUVER TO KAOHSIUNG

This voyage starts with the vessel loading a cargo of pulp and lumber in BC Canada for ports in Korea, China and Japan. The vessel then goes to dry dock in China. Extensive footage of this, including the many different and interesting aspects of dry docking. After dry dock, the vessel loads steel in Shanghai. During the stay in Shanghai, there is much footage of the vast armada of traffic on the river, passing the berth where the ship is loading. The vessel then calls at Kaohsiung in Taiwan, to load more steel and also three large motor Yachts. Also included in the video, are numerous close-up shots of many different ships seen on the voyage. The crew working (including overhauling part of the main engine) and involved in other aspects of shipboard life. Interviews with the Captain and members of the crew.

 
 
 
     
 

FROM EUROPE TO JAPAN

This trip starts in with the vessel loading a full lumber cargo in Germany for the USA. After discharge the vessel proceeds to Brazil to load pulp and ingots for Japan. Included in this video is the interesting trip through the Chesapeake Delaware canal, with its many low bridges. Also much footage of the vessels transit through the Panama canal. The engine room features, with an overhaul of one of the main engine pistons.

Interviews with the Captain and members of the crew and shots of the crew working and involved in leisure activities. Close up shots of the many ships seen during the voyage.

THE BRAZILIAN VOYAGES

A trip on a modern cargo vessel, from the North Brazilian port of Vila do Conde, with a cargo of ingots, bulk clay and bulk manganese to ports in Japan and China. The vessel then loads a full cargo of sodium sulfate in Nanjing. During the 230 mile trip up the Yangtze river to Nanjing, there is much footage of the vast armada of traffic on the river. The vessel then proceeds via Sunda to Durban for bunkers before proceeding to Recife in Brazil. Vitoria and Santos are then visited.

Also included in the video, are numerous close up shots, of many different ships seen on the voyage. Many different aspects of the work the crew are involved in and other activities on board.

Spectacular shots of birds and various sealife are shown in the video. Comentary throughout and music where appropriate.

FROM BRITISH COLUMBIA TO LOS ANGELES
This video shows the loading and unloading of lumber, pulp, steel and newsprint cargos by gantry cranes. It covers many different ports visited in Canada, the US West Coast and the Far East. Dozens of different ships are seen during the voyage.

Also an engine problem requires the vessel to be under tow for two days. Very interesting footage of the vessel connecting up to the tug.

A busy day in Osaka with many different things happening on the ship. A interesting trip through the Kanmon straight between the Japanese Islands of Honsu and Kyushu. Shots of the Engineers getting ready and entering into the duct keel to to make an inspection. Wonderful seabird shots as a flock of abatrosses follow the ship for two weeks.

THE MISSING VOYAGES

This video features various voyages not shown in the previous 8 videos in the series, also different unique and different aspects of life at sea .

A trip through the busy inland sea of Japan, with many shots of ships passing close by. The vessels first drydock at Shin Kasado in Japan. A voyage from Brazil to Capetown. The truck voyage, where truck bodies are carried on deck, from Japan to San Juan Puerto Rico. The yacht voyage, where three large motor yachts are carried on deck from BC to Port Everglades, with interesting footage of a yacht being carefully discharged. Also on this voyage there is shots of the vessels trip through the Panama canal.

Other different events feature in the video including, unique footage of cars racing round the dock in Hachinohe Japan, a trip the Captain made on a Harley Davidson and a trip he made in a seaplane owned by a ships pilot.
